Peel Zoo In The Media

Peel Zoo is arguably one of Australia's best boutique Zoos. Set in a natural wetland, the Zoo is enveloped by native flora and fauna. This serene environment is an ideal location in which to look after animals. And that's why they flourish. Take a look at these good news stories to see for yourself.

Itchy & Scratchy: Channel 10 News

Peel Zoo Leading The Way In Breeding The Endangered Tasmanian Devil

Itchy & Scratchy are 4 month old Tassie Devil joeys, currently being hand reared by the Keepers at Peel Zoo, Pinjarra, Western Australia. This is the story broadcast on the Channel 10 Perth News. It's the first media appearance by the Devils. Peel Zoo bred 10 joeys this year, from 1 male and 3 females. That makes the Zoo's breeding program one of the most successful in Australia. It also means the decimation of the wild population by the Devil Facial Tumour Disease is partially offset by captive breeding. Hopefully a cure can be found for the disease, and the wild stocks can be repopulated by the mainland's insurance population.

Tassie Devils Arrive At Peel Zoo

1 Male and 3 Female Tassie Devils Arrive At Peel Zoo, , Pinjarra, WA

Peel Zoo is fortunate enough to look after 4 Tasmanian Devils; 1 male and 3 females. Our aim is to breed quarantined animals, free from Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD). In doing this we ensure there is a disease free population available to be released back into the wild, when the time comes. In the meantime, the insurance population on the mainland of Australia, serves a valuable role in educating the public about the fragility of our native fauna.

DFTD has devastated the wild population in Tasmania. The Devil is now listed as Endangered by Federal and State governments. It is on the Red List of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). The species is vulnerable to extinction.

At present, there is no cure for the disease and no way of stopping it ravaging the native stocks in Tasmania.
